A deep blue stone with flecks of white calcite and gold (pyrites)
The blue colour is formed from sulphur atoms.
Lapis = Latin for stone
Lazuli = blue
The stone has been in use since 5000BC.
The Romans believed that it had aphrodisiac properties, whilst in the middle ages it was believed to give you healthy limbs.
Found in North and South America, Canada, USSR and Asia.
The paint colour Ultra Marine is formed from crushed lapis and was favoured by many of the great masters.
